In either case, the detectors pick up nuggets. You'll need a pretty good piece of gold to be picked up by a detector - depending on the shape of the nugget and the design of the detector it will need to be minimum 0.1-0.3 grams.
The gold at Estelle in Alaska is disseminated in quartz veins. Its basically dust and is not visible to the naked eye. A detector will generally not be able to detect it.
