Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries do not typically use graphite in their traditional form for the anode as lithium-ion batteries do. Instead, the anode in a Li-S battery is usually made of metallic lithium. However, research has been conducted on modifying the anode with materials like graphene or graphene derivatives, which are structurally related to graphite but are not graphite in the conventional sense used in lithium-ion batteries:

    • Graphite as Anode Material: Traditional lithium-ion batteries use graphite as an anode material due to its ability to intercalate lithium ions. However, in Li-S batteries, graphite isn't commonly used for this purpose because the chemistry and design goals differ. The primary aim is to utilize the high energy density of sulfur, and lithium metal anodes are preferred for their high capacity.
    • Use of Graphene or Carbon Structures: There are studies and developments where graphene, which can be considered an enhanced form of graphite with a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice, has been explored as a component in Li-S batteries. Graphene's high surface area and conductivity can help in managing the polysulfide shuttle effect, improving the battery's efficiency and lifespan. Some research has looked into using graphene-based materials or composites with sulfur to improve cathode performance or as interlayers to contain sulfur species during cycling. These applications are part of ongoing research to enhance Li-S battery technology but do not involve graphite in the typical anode role.

Therefore, while graphite is not used in traditional Li-S battery anodes, related carbon materials like graphene might be employed in innovative designs or research prototypes to address specific challenges in Li-S battery technology. These developments aim to leverage the unique properties of carbon materials without using graphite in its traditional form.
