Well you are partially right that, as the deeper they go the density of the mud increases, however this therefor has a greater force on the well bore. The gas oil or what ever will hopefully be held out by the mud, and is one of the reasons for having mud.
Therefor the gas going through the chromatograph in this case is from the cuttings removed to the surface. So higher or lower gas comes from the cuttings not denisty of the mud.
