I held both NST and SAR for some time. I then decided that SAR offered much better value and greater leverage to the super pit upside, so I sold my NST holding. I therefore can't really swallow the "merger of equals" rhetoric.

If you can't beat them join them. Not late to buy back into NST.

As an NST SH for many years I've never regretted holding long. As your predicament shows, you lose more from going in and out than you gain... Get in there get a free carry parcel and after that all you need is patience for the bags to come in.
