The normal practice in glassouse trials is to plant excess seeds to requirement and then once the majority of seedlings have succesfully established (eg. 10 cm height), "thin" the seedlings (ie. remove unwanted seedlings), so that each pot contains the same number of healthy seedlings of equal size, vigor and height. This practice ensures uniformity of plants across all treatments, so that there is no bias that could occur due to plant size, vigor or plant number per pot. We hope the chemists at Monash followed this simple principle practised by plant scientists.
