here's what that means.

Santonian 'fan' sands is the target here & the reason for them to drill, Turonian is the source. The fault to the east should hold as a local seal, so u r basically looking at a combination trap obvious frm their diagrams in their releases (ie Sediments sitting/bound in a stratigraphic sequence). They have drilled thro' the upper 2 targets (Late Cretaceous sands) & recovered the oil sample from a thinner sand.

To the untrained eye, what they didn't tell this morning (due to confi clause), is the fluid volume recovered frm the sample chamber, type/density of oil, reservoir properties, any water cut/gas associ with the oil etc etc. The formations were coming in slightly higher which is what u want, as per my brief chat with CN.

The other well 24kms SE frm here is targeting a different trap ie carbonate platform (like what Tangiers drilled recently).

If u could flick thro the preso from Cairn, they r calling the lower horizon as the H300 at Fan-1 & this has 535 mmbbls gross unrisked resource attributed to it (the upper H150 horizon had 282 mmbbls).

Next once they get back to drilling the remaining 600m interval from 4402m till 5000m TD & if the sands r HC bearing (& with a gas cap) they'll pick up elevated gas readings, change in fluid resistivity, associated fluorescence frm the cuttings, the usual gamut. Its an interesting part of the well & if it comes in should b good. GLTA.
