If a Company buys back its shares for less than their intrinsic value, then although the pie becomes smaller, the continuing shareholders will actually each own a bigger piece of pie. It should (if you have directors who have a good understanding of capital allocation and intrinsic value) result greater earnings per share for the continuing shareholders than would otherwise have been the case if there had been no buy-back.
