Patent applications can take years to complete. Odds are they applied for this and many other patents long before they would have had any idea of how the trails were going, if they had even started at all at that time. It seems like it's something they'd be doing as a preparatory step for any new drug in development and I'm certainly not reading too much into it other than it's a positive step that the patent was granted.
