I agree that WGX is a laggard, and IMO will remain a laggard until they get a vastly improved management team. I have traded MLX/WGX several times since around 2015 and that has been the only way to make money and stay sane during a lot of share price gyrations - so far I have done OK, but I certainly would not trust them.
My portfolio is filled with laggards (or recovering laggards) and WGX is a significant but much smaller holding compared with SBM, PRU, RSG, KCN. I am not relying on WGX to provide multiples returns, although I think its share price could double under better management if targets were met. For quick returns one needs to look at the explorers (or small developers?), but that is pretty risky so I only buy small lottery tickets in them. I am willing to hold onto WGX for the time being since most other goldies are pretty expensive, except for those with a special story (eg PRU's completion of its Yaoure project) and I have other shares that are doing OK and spare cash if I am interested in owning other shares.
At some point I will sell out of WGX again, hopefully well after they have undertaken the operational improvements and the AUD POG is even higher. If I were to see the AUD POG tanking then I would be out, since its clearly a high cost operator.
