    I imagine that Al Gore's recent claim that wind and solar are now cheaper than coal will be getting exposure in the mainstream media. Don't be fooled into thinking that this poses any kind of risk to coal: the economics of unreliables (aka renewables) is as bleak as ever. (1) They are still wholly dependent on subsidies. (2) The correct comparison is of renewables lifetime cost vs (coal/gas marginal cost plus backup spinning cost). Unreliables on the grid are uneconomic. Period.


    If anyone is tempted to believe Al Gore, then let's do an experiment: remove all mandates and all subsidies, require the grid operators to minimise cost, and see where they then source their power.
