Regarding the pump failure issue, a slotted tailpipe at the intake of a PCP pump would normally stop large pieces of coal from entering the pump and damaging the elastomer. PCP pumps can usually withstand high levels of small coal particles, but not large pieces of coal. I think modern Kobe type jet pumps are also unable to withstand blocking from large pieces of coal, so installing a wire mesh screen inside the casing might be the answer.
