It is situated very close to the Chelmsford dam, about 30km south of Newcastle in Kwa Zulu Natal, and is a major source of water for the region, including the Mittal steelworks.

there was some concern that opencast blasting would compromise the integrity of the dam wall and that the water Affairs dept had made ministerial represenattions to rescind the mining permissions.

If this is true it must cast aspersions on the announcements emanating from management
