There are a few ways a larger investor could buy in. Obviously on market would drive the price up if they were hungry for shares.

Some companies, EMC is a recent example, have got some larger holders to band together and offload some shares in order to get a larger strategic investor on board to further the companies activities. While at a price less than market price it was beneficial to the companies forward plans.

With some details of the raise being posted on here, it doesn't really sound like its a big investor coming on board, just raising some money. You have to wonder why they chose to raise now instead of after the expected news flow later this month, hope there is some commentary with the raise.
