Would your comments raise the question whether the NPV is an outcome, or a pre-selected target for the optimisation if they used Lerchs Grossman ?
The back story to Lerchs Grossman is quite interesting. Lerchs being 88 and still kicking.

I had my own concerns as a lay person of a cricket pitch width at the mine floor and 230 m deep - I'd rather face a Thomson over than a falling rock.

Long story short I think the conclusion you point at is that it is a challenging mining operation rather than straight-forward up the guts with bags of smoke style operation.
