On the subject of chasing lower and lower grades. In the 1800s in Victoria they chased ounces per ton. 10 pennyweights per ton was considered low ... that was a cutoff (around 17 grams per tonne), but acceptable in a mine which had averaged 1.5 ounces per ton (around 50 grams per tonnne).
