Synthetic graphite is produced in a controlled environment - good handle on crystallinity quality etc. Natural flake graphite deposits obviously arise in an uncontrolled environment - all manner of parameter combinations possible, good through bad (grade/FSD/crystallinity/impurity types/clay content etc.)
Natural flake quality my be reduced during mining, flake liberation and downstream processing.
High quality natural flake graphite, processed to SPG via a flowsheet where the quality is largely preserved, negates the need for synthetic graphite. The use of synthetic graphite in anodes is largely an insurance policy against variable natural flake quality in bulk processing.
