The profit margin on orphan drugs is higher than the pharmaceutical industry average. Orphan drugs are reported to have a gross profit margin of over 80%, whereas the pharmaceutical industry average is 16%5. This higher profit margin is attributed to factors such as higher pricing, market exclusivity, and incentives related to research and development . Publicly listed pharmaceutical companies that are orphan drug market authorization holders are associated with higher market value and greater profits than companies not producing treatments for rare diseases.
