one consideration is as @Denial indicated... lending your shares for a revenue stream (interest charge etc) which then helps offset any potential share price decline... it would have to be a serious long term holder to undertake this but.... as the earnings may go nowhere near the value of the sp decline.... but, if you had faith in eventual recovery, you may consider this...

i do know of (sorry, actually, i think i know of) a scenario where shares are being used as loan security, and coincidentally, when the shares were secured an almost identical short position started of the same sized share holding... shorts jumped from 1% to 4% basically at the same time... and that 3% was the same volume of shares as the loan security...

so i think there's more options out there that probably what a lot of us acknowledge or know of.
