I also think there is a psyche for many that they can’t accept an ‘average’ result...that they always have to find a way to beat average. Active fund managers point of difference is they aim to meet that ‘need’ (whether they actually achieve it or not is an entirely different matter).
(Mind you, achieving the average yearly market returns over the long run would prove more than adequate for the vast majority of people)
