AFR made the information public from what was, presumably a source who was supposed to keep it confidential. The information the AFR published obviously wasn't previously public information as the share price shot up after they published it!
Companies get approaches on a regular basis only a fraction of which get reported by outlets such as the AFR usually when 3rd party advisors get involved.
