Thanks Klogg. The Australian website makes the value proposition they can now offer in NZ clear, with the key thing being their ability to do the transaction processing currently carried out by banks. (The opaque jargon "acquirer" could better be described as transaction processor). Some examples - obviously depending on turnover:
Given 30K New Zealand customers already have a contract and regular bill from SMP, this seems like a no brainer - why not save some money?
Of course the other option they provide is to pass transaction costs on to customers as a surcharge- these vary and calculation can be complex, but SMP terminals take care of this automatically, and also offer a waiver option for individual sales.
This could also be attractive for some businesses - at least it's proved to be in Australia.
Does anyone know what the profit margin on the "acquirer" part of the business is - or how much of their revenue and expenses it contributes?
