If it wasn't serious it'd be a bloody joke!
I recently got an interesting account of the make up of a tesla battery (but noting the assumption of average ore grades give and take):
To manufacture it you need:
12 tonnes of rock for Lithium
5 tons for Cobalt minerals
3 tons for nickel
12 tons of copper ore
Move 250 tons of soil to obtain:
12 kg of Lithium
14 kg of nickels
22 kg of manganese
7 kg of Cobalt
200 kg of aluminum, steel and plastic.
The Caterpillar 994A used for earthmoving consumes 1000 liters of diesel in 12 hours.
The base-load electricity to produce the zero-emissions battery car is greater than producing a conventional car.
The Tesla car manufacturing plants are connected to the conventional grid.
There are token solar panel fields which are show ponies, but the base-load electricity used to manufacture comes from conventional power generation.
Finally you get a “zero emissions” car.
Then, what happens to the inevitable used highly toxic waste batteries?
Land fill.
