“The waves drive a buoy up and down, which in turn drives the pump up and down, which in turn delivers high pressure water ashore through a pipe, which is then used to spin a hydroelectric turbine onshore to generate the electricity.”

"High pressure water is then returned to the ocean on the back of the turbine, and then re-pressurized through the pump creating a fully closed-loop system which does not even require salt water to enter. Once again the use of fresh water, bearing in mind system maintenance, allows less wear and tear on this well-controlled system. Of course, this complex and well-developed technology did not spring up over night. It has been aided by Carnegie’s dedicated and private wave energy test facility off the coast of Fremantle, the west coast of Australia."
