Agree and respect greatly your perspective here - what a lovely display of humanity (and sorely needed on a forum that typically focuses upon profit).
The mechanisms behind a rigorous randomised trial are such that bedside care givers will not know what 'side' of the trial any given patient is on...however....
In the event that an entire cohort of patients display unmistakable results (good or bad) a study is terminated early and decisions are fast tracked accordingly.
'If' trials produce such clear cut unmistakable results - it's at this point that staff (who are clearly not stupid) will know who got what....
and I agree with you - even though the informed decision making process and consent to proceed documentation will make the risks clear - the possible eventuation of being on the 'wrong side of the fence' would be a tough pill to swallow indeed.
