I had exactly the same reaction. My partner and I traveled through Europe on crowded planes and trains and each night did either a diluted Betadine or a saline nasal wash. As a side note, neither of us contracted a viral infection in our 6 weeks of travel. One time I forgot to put the Sodium chloride/Sodium bicarbonate solution into the distilled body temperature water. The distilled water without the additives caused discomfort. I too have no idea why anyone would use plain distilled water on the nasal mucous membrane.
