To do the power calculations you have to make assumptions about the effect size and patient heterogeneity. With a larger trial you can make more conservative assumptions and effectively reduce the chance of the trial failing if your assumptions were wrong.
Reducing the patient numbers is not costless or else they would have only had 130 patients in the trial from the start. None of this is simple and there are always trade offs that have to be made.
