China is not out of the woods yet.Trivium ( a Beijing consultancy) estimates China is operating at 83% of average output at present, compared with 66% in mid-March. China has risks from both going back to work and also a lack of exports due to shutdowns in overseas markets.
The Financial Times says China has banned foreign residents with valid residence permits from returning to the country, making it difficult for many multinational companies to reopen. It is still hard for residents of Wuhan to leave. In Beijing anyone arriving from elsewhere in China faces 14 days quarantine. There have also been new outbreaks in several centres including the northeastern province of Heilongjiang. Train service to Harbin an industrial centre of 11 million people there have been suspended.Yet many large cities in the south and elsewhere seem to have bounced back, including Shanghai and Chengdu.
Things are not yet back to normal everywhere in China, so it will be interesting to get an update from PET on how our projects are doing. Fortunately apart from Wuhan and Peking most of our projects appear to be in less affected areas.
