It is illegal to place a bid without the intention to buy. personally I don't think what you did was illegal, but it shows just how much illegal manipulation is occurring in the market. A person received a 2.5 year suspended jail sentence a week or so ago for market manipulation. He had 13 trading accounts, bought and sold between accounts to give impression of activity. He went by the name of Fibonacrchery on HotCopper (might have misspelled the name). The system is corrupt. Why can't ASIC do what you did and track down those illegal bids. I no longer buy in one trade, but do a small trade to determine what the real market is. Like you say, if someone is buying and you put a bid in your bid gets overbid and you can end up chasing the price and paying more than you initially wanted.
