They didn't need to do a trial to show this - all the measures you mentioned are validated outcomes widely used in research in this patient group. They even used the word 'validated' when describing the brain imaging method - meaning that it is a relevant and objective measure to use and has been for a long time. If they were trialling a new assessment tool, fair enough, but they're not.
