If they stop purchasing bonds (i.e. letting rates rise), yields will explode and the result will be a massive economic depression, the governments around the world are reliant on extreme low rates to stay afloat.
Gold is correlated with real interest rates, i.e. if inflation gets going in a big way but bond rates can't keep up then that is good for gold.
