Just a follow up on my above post, I thought it prudent to see what I could find about the Glencore operation - to understand why it was a problem there.

I found this report from 2009, that appears to suggest that radiation was a known risk at start up:

"The areas which have been identified where risk mitigation measures are deemed warranted are the disused uranium ore storage locations adjacent to Kingamyambo Tailings Dam and north of the KOV Pit, Katapula-Luilu tailings area, Kolwezi concentrator ore concentrate storage area, Sulphide Tailings
Dam, and the Luilu River"

I couldn't find any historic reference to the project being a uranium mine in the past, but find it odd that there is a reference to "uranium ore storage", so assume it may well have been.
