I'm going to try and answer my own question about TMRs. Would be nice not to keep guessing, but I will have to guess. To me it looks like a contingency plan in case the 12CQ control-read out took a lot longer to work out. Now that it has seen success, at least the control has been successful in the lab and the read out separately works, it's very possible that it's all hands to the pump on a 12CQ working qubit plan.
If the quantum tech is viable and scalable on a commercial level and leading peers validate and want it, I agree with others here, we could get taken over relatively cheaply.
