With the ongoing cycle testing of the Hazer low grade graphite it is worth giving some thought to what we might expect to see as the batteries are cycled further. Hazer have previously stated that the graphite produced is at least partially onion like and as we can see from the video (@ around the 3 minute mark) some time back the particles certainly seem to show defined layering. IF the graphite that we are producing does indeed take on the properties of carbon nano onions rather than typical graphite then we may be in for a pleasant surprise from the updated cycle testing.
From the announcement on 13th December
“Hazer graphite shows specific capacity on initial discharge of 445 mAh/g, compared to commercial synthetic graphite with 331 mAh/g capacity
Initial results performed within the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Sydney University showed the company’s graphite product significantly outperformed the benchmark material, with an initial discharge specific capacity of 445 mAh/g (milliampere hour per gram) compared to 331 mAh/g capacity performance from a synthetic commercial graphite. These results also significantly exceed the performance of natural graphite anodes, which typically show first discharge capacity in the range of 360-370 mAh/g, and highlight that Hazer’s graphite, even as a non-optimised product, outperforms both synthetic and natural graphite products on first discharge capacity.”

At around 3 minutes a few pics are included which show some of the Hazer graphite morphologies

This Link has a little more about CNO’s and as you can see the Hazer graphite appears to have a similar structure, albeit with many more layers in the above pic

If Hazer graphite does take on at least partial CNO like properties then there is a possibility that from around the 15 cycle mark that we will actually start to see an increase in specific capacity as demonstrated in the picture below from the paper at this Link If this is the case then there is no mined or synthetic graphite that will be able to match the capacity or cycle tolerance offered by Hazer. Just a theory for now but time will tell.
