Do you mean when I first start researching a company whose financial statements I am looking at for the very first time (i.e., with a view to discerning the financial "pedigree" of such a business?

Or do you mean when looking at the most recent reported results of a company whose financials I already know reasonably well (i.e., assessing the quality of the just-reported results)?
