    So approx. $12 AUD billion is assets being divested. Isn't that roughly same as oil assets sold to BP? At the time BHP did a buy back at around $27per share and then around $5b was paid in special dividend of around $1. Suspect this time around assets on the table may not be as attractive, plus timing for coal maybe wrong.

    And analysts at Shaw and Partners reckon the three coal divestments would be worth around $US7.1 billion ($9.8 billion) in total.Shaws valued the Mt Arthur mine at $US3.2 billion, Cerrejon at $US656 million and the BMC assets at $US3.2 billion, in a note to clients on Wednesday, which questioned why BHP had made "no mention of climate change and carbon neutrality in terms of this exit".The resources behe 1moth also said it would look to sell its Bass Strait assets, which supply gas to Australia's eastern states. The company had a go at offloading them in 2016 but decided to hold onto them and Shaws reckoned they'd be worth $US2.1 billion.
