Large item fabrication isn't a case of can't be made in Australia it is mainly the relative high cost of labour in Australia versus the low cost in Asia. Also a load of manufacturers moved their production offshore when our dollar got up around parity although I believe some have started to reconsider Australian production. A load of the big miners and even Australian Governments started requiring international tenders as part of their project planning and as you said imported finished goods have soared.
