    BlueGen boost

Ceramic Fuel Cells says it has achieved a major milestone after its BlueGen microgeneration heat and power unit received the appropriate accreditation in the UK that means it can now benefit from the UK feed-in tariffs. Ceramic CEO Brendan Dow said BlueGen is the first fuel cell product to be eligible for the UK tariff, which will pay customers 10.5p/kWh for electricity produced and a further 3.1pkWh for electricity exported into the grid.

The fuel cells to use natural gas to create electricity and heat for hot water, and each unit capable of producing more than three times the electricity needed to power the average UK home. BlueGen also provides heat for domestic hot water use. The company has been lobbying, so far without success, for its fuel cells to receive a tariff in Australia, or to be recognized under other green incentive schemes. ?Feed in tariffs play an important part in the UK?s clean energy policy and becoming eligible for the feed in tariffs is a significant step forward for sales of our BlueGen product in the UK market,? Dow said. Ceramic shares on Thursday gained 10.3 per cent to 16c.

On Friday, Ceramic announced an 81 per cent increase in revenue from operations to $3.6 million for the year to 30 June, 2011, recording a net loss of $21.1 million. It said its cash balance was $19 million. Dow said the company would benefit further from evolving energy policies in several Western European markets. In particular, he said the phasing out of nuclear power in Germany will create significant opportunities for low-emission energy products, and the greater reliance on intermittent renewable power will also increase the need for flexible and controllable distributed power generation. He said north America also held great potential, and there were significant prospects in Asia (especially China), Middle East, South Africa, Central and Eastern Europe, Russia and South America (Brazil).
