I lived on a farm ,
half way between Sydney and Melbourne.
at a place called Tarcutta.
in the late 1970s
the DMR were up grading the Hume Hwy
after a series of bad accident on a two way road.
they made the decision to make it a dual carriage way
our farm was quiet rough.
lot of clearing had been done in the 1940s
by my dads dad.
my dad worked the land hard
from sun rise to sun set
as well as being a shearer.
not uncommon for dad to put me in the Ute at 6pm
and hay bale till night time.
then dad would be up for shearing at 5am.
the extra cash from shearing helped.
yet dad always will say.
the making of him and the extra cash
to pay off the farm was when.
DMR come knocking on dads door.
saying they had tested his gravel on the hill
near the front gate and it was perfect
for the road base.
dad believe over the period of 3 years
it was worth $20,000 in the late 70s.
it helped dad own the farm outright
in the early 80s
why am I telling you this tale.
some times at the start things may not be , what you thought
the farm was rough.
dad worked hard
and things fell into place cause of that.
at present many are seeing the opportunity
and doing the extra shift to get more leverage on SPQ.
right place right time
upgrade to the hwy highway
