Personally I find the whole technological development of various Li-ion chemistry types fascinating.
Each type has their own advantages and disadvantages and it would seem that the consumer EV market in particular will continue to gravitate towards higher Nickel ternary batteries primarily due to their volumetric advantages. Obviously there are other significant benefits, however the power and range available from ternary batteries available to be packed into a smaller space is major.
On the other hand something like 96% of EV buses in China rely on Li-on cells with LFP cathodes.
6 - 12 months ago many industry figureheads were talking of the demise of LFP cathodes yet more recently we have seen announcements from BYD and CATL that they have made significant advances in the manufacturing of LFP based cells and modules and now we see Tesla is going to utilize them in some Chinese domestic consumer vehicles and that they will meet the minimum range requirements for subsidies.
I think it is significant for the future of the entire lithium supply chain when we see the results of continued costly development of what was seen by some as a near obsolete technology.
This shows that big development dollars are still going into all levels of Li-ion tech and can only be good for the industry as a whole.
Really it seems the answer to the question of which cathode type is better requires the follow up response of "for what use?"
Next step is commercialisation of solid state lithium batteries with the addition of lithium in the anode. The future is bright.
