    Thinking about this some more...

We already have mechanisms to remove schemes (visa, MasterCard). PayID exists.

How do you move people off that?

You still have to compete with other acquirers, issuers and schemes. Unless you can serve all of these functions more cheaply (switching, terminal/POS integration, banking, schemes) then I don't see how you beat the existing network.

Further, the existing network effects are very powerful. In fact, they even have regulatory backing and it's extremely unlikely our regulators will allow a foreign entity to cut out the Australian banks. Add to that the plethora of benefits for using a credit card scheme (points/rewards, working capital, balance transfer), and that any new player must play nice with all of these... It's crazily hard to break.

The biggest changes have always been at the user end (swipe, chip, NFC, QR code) but the underlying infrastructure is unchanged. The NAB payments system Connex is more relevant now than ever, even though it's written on some questionable COBOL. So are Visa, MasterCard and Amex.
