    Transforming Tata Power

We had a chat with one of our key speakers at the event, Nitin Rohilla, Chief - SAP Centre of Excellence at The Tata Power Company Limited, and asked him a few questions. We would like to thank him for his interesting responses and support!

Tell us about business transformation at Tata Power. What were the key business and organizational issues driving change?

Tata Power is India’s largest integrated power company with a significant international presence. From Fuel and Logistics to Generation and Transmission to Distribution and Trading-exploring various renewable sources of energy in India and globally, now has a significant presence in wind, solar, hydro and geothermal energy space.

Technology leadership at Tata Power is legendary and has demonstrated successful public-private partnerships in Generation, Transmission and Distribution - "Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited" with Delhi Vidyut Board for distribution in North Delhi, 'Powerlinks Transmission Ltd.' with Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. for evacuation of Power from Tala hydro plant in Bhutan to Delhi and 'Maithon Power Ltd.' with Damodar Valley Corporation for a Mega Power Project at Jharkhand.

Today, Tata Power is poised for multifold growth. Tata Power is one of the largest renewable energy players in India and have developed the country’s first 4000 MW Ultra Mega Power Project at Mundra (Gujarat) based on super-critical technology. Our international presence includes strategic investments in Indonesia through 30% stake in coal mines and a geothermal project; in Singapore through Trust Energy Resources to securitise coal supply and the shipping of coal for its thermal power generation operations; in South Africa through a joint venture called ‘Cennergi’ to develop projects in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia; in Australia through investments in enhanced geothermal and clean coal technologies and in Bhutan through a hydro project in partnership with The Royal Government of Bhutan.

The Company has an installed generation capacity of 8560 MW in India and a presence in all the segments of the power sector viz Generation (thermal, hydro, solar and wind), Transmission, Distribution and Trading. To put this into perspective, this is a growth which took a century to build in the past. Elsewhere, the largest private sector power plant in India has refined processes to manage transformation and change, while we have also engaged in harnessing alternative power sources such as solar and wind, and invested in many new age tech companies that support the theme of sustainable existence.

There are several business and organizational issues that have driven this transformation. The impact of climate change on the regulatory environment has certainly changed our outlook, as has the slow economic pace and inconsistent regulatory reforms in distribution and coal. We face other challenges in securing fuel and also with increasing community activism leading to issues of land acquisition and smooth running of our operations and project sites.
