Latrobe Magnesium drives MgO production forwardLatrobe Magnesium (LMG) is moving forward with the construction of equipment to extract magnesium products from lignite fly ash at its facility in Victoria's La Trobe Valley.The company has modified the process flowsheet to allow for early production of magnesium oxide to bring forward revenue and allow time for furnace automation to be commissioned.The focus is on installing the ash treatment, spray roasting and magnesite sections. Magnesium metal production will follow later with a reduction furnace, automation and a vacuum system.Rainstorm Dust Control was initially contracted to sell the company's MgO.According to the company: "The advantage of this strategy is that LMG can test its patented Hydromet process more quickly."LMG's primary intellectual property relates to the extraction of magnesium from lignite fly ash."This strategy will demonstrate that LMG's unique, world-first hydromet process can be successfully operated and prove to all stakeholders the true value of LMG's intellectual property.Latrobe Magnesium is talking to a number of investors as potential partners for Stage 3 expansion, which would create a 100,000-tpa plant.Non-binding letters of intent with potential equity partners are expected to be signed later this year.
