All the defendants in the Bali nine drugs case have appeared together for the first time in the Denpasar Court in Indonesia.

The Australians are facing the death sentence for allegedly trying to smuggle more than eight kilograms of heroin from the Indonesian island to Australia.

The nine arrived together in a police bus and were taken to a holding cell.

They were gathered to give evidence in the trial of Newcastle woman Renae Lawrence, who is accused of being one of four "mules".

The mules had the drugs strapped to their bodies when they were arrested.

Most of the testimony came from another of the mules, Martin Lawrence of Wollongong, who repeatedly named Andrew Chan as the mastermind and owner of the heroin.

Chan, who is from Sydney, was arrested at a hotel in Bali.

Lawrence said Chan had threatened to kill him.

Lawrence also said Chan told him he could make just one call and his family would be dead when he got back to Australia.

The trial has been adjourned for a week.
