There are some interesting points of view stated in this discussion. I don't agree with your argument however. I wish I could afford to buy and hold forever. I thought I would never sell ALL my bank stocks but I did so in February (thank goodness!). This is the first period EVER I have never held a single bank stock. Just because someone is not a current holder in a stock does not mean they have no interest in the stock. I often follow and post in threads for stocks I don't currently hold but have traded in and out of over several years (for example, AX1, BSL).
As stated above I would just love to buy and hold stocks, even the speckies like KZA but when the management announce a capital raise and SPP @40c, when the stock has just come off a three month average price of closer to 60c, I as a retail investor, have to look after my best interests. Last week my judgement was to buy @40c. Today I sold on market in two parcels. Now I will most likely hold and when the SPP documents come out I will decide to what extent I will participate taking into account my rather long watchlist of potential buys on the ASX.
