this demand for more data is a new phenomena, like the internet itself, and computers more generally, just like when the first printing press was invented, literacy levels began to sky rocket afterwards. Certain technologies change the surrounding landscape to such an extent that become paradigm shifts. Free data will certainly change the internet landscape, most poignantly, it will bring the net to those who can't presently afford it.
The higher demand for data will necessitate change in the way it is delivered. Syntonic is at the forefront of this change for prepay systems in the developing world, and soon enough something must give in the developing world too. I would not be surprise that in a few years, all data will be free, just as the price of books changed over 500 years ago from priceless hand written manuscripts to dime a dozen copy.
