I am currently working as a Research Assistant on an Enterprise Ireland funded commercialisation project in University College Dublin (UCD) centred on the clinical evaluation of a blood-based diagnostic for extracapsular extension in prostate cancer. This biomarker blood panel (OCProDx) uses MRM mass spectrometry to measure 63 proteins in the blood of clinically diagnosed prostate cancer patients to determine if the tumour has spread beyond the prostate and requires immediate treatment, or can be managed effectively with active surveillance. This validation experiment coincides with the formation of a spinout company called Atturos, which has licensed the IP for this OCProDx test from UCD and plans to launch it on the European market by 2019. I have taken the lead on the Business Development work package which has included developing investor-ready business plans and marketing content, managing the Atturos website (http://atturos.com/) patent searching, brainstorming regulatory and accreditation pathways and reimbursement strategies, continuous market research and detailed competitor analysis. In May 2016 I organised a series of multi-disciplinary clinical, technical, and commercial brainstorming workshops to gather input from a broad range of stakeholders including clinical pathologists, urologists, instrument manufacturers, patient representatives, diagnostics industry experts, and potential investors. I also assist in the technical processing of patient serum samples, manage clinical and experimental data, prepare performance reports, and contribute to the day-to-day operations of the research lab. I feel particularly well equipped in this role and enjoy balancing commercial development activities with patient-focussed scientific research.
