Short traders or any traders don't care if stocks look cheap or not and their aim is to take advantage of any situation to make a buck, the minute QBE released their result and the momentum started to build and it was down the shorts were already taking positions and going down with the momentum, we can all argue that result was not too bad or market was over reacting or anything else in between but the truth is market did not like it and that was the reality all of us must accept and move with the TREND in order to make money and I would not try to catch a falling knife and would rather wait till it sets a new trend and I don't need to justify market movement as it is what it is, but in time as it is only a matter of time before they change trend again and start to go up again.
