Good to know when this collaboration was announced. Had no idea it was in 2020 !
A lot has happened since then.
AXE, like any good research outfit, has always approached its work from many angles until a particular path becomes clear. In 2020 one approach of AXE was to theoretically work out what kind of quantum information the 12CQ qubit material would eventually generate and store. This quantum data would then be looked at to see if it could be used in real world applications that currently use classical computing algorithms. That was where Max Kelsen collab came in. They develop classical AI solutions using large data sets for corporate clients. They know the standard use cases and the classically coded neural networks that deliver. This is the software end of the puzzle.
As the 12CQ development advanced, its hardware has become more defined and more accurate measurements of its quantum information has been happening progressively. Along the way they gained access to supercomputers that could accurately model the qubit material much better than the theoretical models they began with in 2020. So now, rather than be guided by how end user software possibilities can be mapped to theoretical 12CQ qubit behaviour, AXE is being guided by actual hardware to advance the design of quantum circuits and quantum information processing on a chip.
I'm waiting to see AXE reveal its strategy now. Will AXE be in a hurry to go down the quantum-classical AI hybrid route (eg Max Kelsen). Or has the actual 12CQ design advanced to a point where more robust quantum information storage/processing is available. Judging by several of their recent announcements, they're focusing on hardware design and integration, chip packaging. And there are several designs they are looking at.
AXE has several use cases in minds. Neural networks and Max Kelsen is just one of them.
