One of the points made of the recent Chinese advances was that the algorithm they used to demonstrate the power of quantum computers was not useful - they made a supercomputer that can do one thing only. It was still very impressive but what's the point if you can't perform arbitrary computation.
This ann modestly makes the point that the 12CQ chip will be functional, '...aims to validate chip end-uses and high-value practical applications.'
