did the diamonds have a way to change their orbit (spacing) once launched?

If no then fundamentally there was only one way to use them once launched - physics will dictate their relative velocities won't change, which in this case looks like the original spacing is effectively unchanged since launch. 

Comments about changes to use them as demonstrators rather than generating revenue are pretty suspect.
